It is beyond the scope of schools to fix social ills, economic inequities, family dysfunction and mental health problems, but it remains the responsibility of educators to inspire academic motivation in students. School leaders must provide faculty with the professional development that empowers them to reach students whose motivation has been damaged by trauma and other forces from outside school.
